Landlord Raises Rent Again the Next Month
Some business owners say, “They say the rent increase happens once a year, but the price hikes aren’t like that.” Others say, “After the landlord raises the rent, the next month they ask again, saying, ‘We need another price increase, it’s still low, it’s not enough to cover our costs.’”
Exceeding the Legal Increase Rate
The rent increase rate for January was 58%. However, many business owners are asking for much higher increases than the legal rate.
As Rents Keep Rising, Businesses Find a Solution in Changing Menu Prices
A kebab shop owner, speaking to StarTV News, stated that their rent increased from 37,000 TL to 73,000 TL. They added, “Right now, we sell a kebab for 405 TL. Before the rent hike, it was 390 TL.”
Shopkeepers Demand Rent Limits
Another business owner, who currently pays 18,000 TL in rent, shared, “The expectation is around 50,000 TL. They’re asking for three times more. To cover that, my hamburgers would need to be around 500 TL.” Shopkeepers are calling for a cap on rent increases.
