Employment Statistics – September 2012
Working age population increased by 1 million 91 thousand in the period of September 2012 compared to the same period of the previous year
While non-institutional population increased by 1 million 170 thousand persons and has reached to 73 million 795 thousand persons, non-institutional working age population has increased by 1 million 91 thousand and has reached to 54 million 923 thousand persons in the period of September 2012.
Labor force participation rate was 51 % in the period of September 2012
Labor force participation rate (LFPR) realized as 51 % with 0.6 percentage points increase compared to the same period of the previous year for Turkey in September 2012 period. LFPR was realized as 72 % with 0,2 percentage points decrease for male compared to the same period of the previous year and realized as 30,7 % with 1,2 percentage points increase for female.
As for the distribution of labor force by education and age group;
16,8 % of the total labor force were comprised of persons within the 15-24 age group.
Labor force participation rate of persons having education below high school was 70,1 % for male while it was 26,9 % for female.
Labor force participation rate of persons with higher education was 85,6 % for male while it was 70,9 % for female.
Non-agricultural employment increased by 696 thousand.
Number of employed persons increased by 723 thousand persons compared to the same period of the previous year and has reached to 25 million 472 thousand persons in the period of September 2012. Agricultural employment increased by 27 thousand persons and non-agricultural employment increased by 696 thousand persons in this period.
Of those who were employed in September 2012; 25,5 % was employed in agriculture, 18,6 % was employed in industry, 7,4 % was employed in construction and 48,4 % was employed in services. Employment in services increased by 1,2 percentage point while that of agriculture decreased by 0,7 percentage point and industry decreased by 0,4 percentage point and employment in construction decreased by 0,2 percentage point.
Structure of employment
In this period, of those who were employed;
70,4 % were male, 57,5 % had education below high school.
63 % were regular and casual employee, 23,1 % were self-employed or employer, 13,9 % were unpaid family worker.
57,9 % worked in establishments consisting of “1-9 employees”.
3,2 % had an additional job.
2,4 % was seeking job either to replace the current job or to augment the existing job.
86,1 % of regular employees worked in permanent jobs.
Persons who were not registered to any social security institutions related to the main job
The ratio of persons who worked without any social security related to the main job declined to 40,1 % with 2,7 percentage point decrease. The share of persons who did not have any social security in agriculture increased from 84,6 % to 84,9 % and that in non-agriculture decreased from 28 % to 24,7% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Unemployment rate was 9,1 %
Number of unemployed persons increased by 141 thousand persons compared to the same period of the previous year and has reached to 2 million 539 thousand persons in Turkey. Unemployment rate realized as 9,1 % with 0,3 points increase. Unemployment rate was realized as 11,3 % with 0,2 percentage points increase in urban areas and reached to 4,8 % with 0,3 percentage points increase in rural areas.
In this period;
Unemployed persons were commonly seeking job through “their acquaintances” (28,5 %).
87 % (2 million 210 thousand) had worked previously.
Among those who were employed previously; 54,4 % were employed in “services”, 20,7 % were employed in “industry”, 15,9 % were employed in “construction”, 5,2 % were employed in “agriculture” and 3,8 % of them quitted their last job before the last eight years.
26,6 % of unemployment persons were those who had a temporary job that was ended, 11,7 % were dismissed, 21,5 % left their job by their own initiative, 6,7 % closed their job or bankrupted, 9,4 % were engaged in household chores, 14 % were in education or training or just graduated and 10,2 % of those were related with other reasons.
53,7 % of persons who were not in the labor force had worked previously
Among persons who had previously worked and were currently out of labor force; 14,3 % had worked in “agriculture”, 10,8 % had worked in “industry”, 3 % had worked in “construction” and 21,1 % had worked in “services” and 50,8 % of them quitted their last job before the last eight years.
Labor movements in the period concerned
2 million 230 thousand persons either started to work or changed their current job in the period of September 2012 and it accounted for the 8,8 % of total employment. 25-34 age group comprises 27,8% of persons who started to work or changed the current job in this period.
Among persons who either began to work or changed the job, 18,8 % have started in “industry”, 36,9 % have started in “services”, 21,7 % have started in “construction” and 22,6 % have started in “agriculture”.
15,6 % (395 thousand persons) of unemployed population were comprised of persons who quitted their job in this period.
In the period of September 2012, number of seasonally adjusted employed persons increased by 290 thousand persons compared to the previous period and number of seasonally adjusted unemployment persons increased by 91 thousand persons. Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate realized as 50,3 % by 0,6 percentage point increase and employment rate realized as 45,6 % by 0,5 percentage point increase. Unemployment rate realized as 9,4 % by 0,2 percentage point increase.
95 818 persons aged 15 and over from the sample households were interviewed in this period.
