Report on media says an animal massacre has taken place in Erzincan

An animal massacre has reportedly taken place in Erzincan. The horrific event was uncovered when stray dogs were allegedly killed by being buried alive in holes dug by a bulldozer in a garbage dump area in the city center. These dogs were reportedly placed in the holes and covered, with some of them still alive when they were buried.

This follows similar incidents in some other municipalities (like those in Gebze and Ümraniye, earlier). Disturbing footage showed the municipal animal collection vehicle transporting the dogs to the dump, where they were thrown into the pits. Some dogs reportedly managed to escape the vehicle, and the situation has caused widespread outrage.

Mustafa Sarıgül, a CHP (Republican People’s Party) politician, condemned the incident, emphasizing that animals living in nature should be protected by everyone. He suggested that municipal authorities should focus on sterilizing and properly caring for stray animals. Sarıgül also expressed his disbelief that such an act could occur in Erzincan, pointing out that the city has historically been environmentally sensitive. He pledged to follow up on the issue.

This is not the first time concerned Municipality has been linked to animal cruelty, as a similar mass killing of cats and dogs was reported in 2022, when dead animals were found in black bags at the city dump, further escalating concerns among animal rights advocates. Some animal lovers and municipal workers claimed they were threatened when they raised their concerns about the situation.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice, as well as for stronger measures to protect animals in urban environments.

The government took some important steps a while ago to bring a solution to stray animals issue. It seems however that some people have misinterpreted the measures put into practice and apparently a more strict inspection / control seems to be essential to prevent (avoid) misusage / appliccation of the regulation (rules) introduced by the authority, not long ago.
