Inflation in Turkey increases in March 2021

April’s inflation rate rose by 1.68 per cent compared to the previous month, to 17.14 per cent. Domestic producer prices increased by 35.17% compared to the same month a year ago, and economists interpreted the increase as an indication the rise in inflation will rise. Inflation is already a 23-month high, after May 2019.

An economist questioned the inflation target after the figures were released. He said, “People will laugh at the annual inflation forecast of 12 percent in the economy, where the cost of intermediate goods has increased by 16 percent in the first 4 months of the year.”

Said economist questioned the inflation target after the figures were released. He described the current picture as “the threshold for raising interest rates” and questioned the necessity of the central bank governor’s change on March 20.

The new central bank governor Kavcioglu had announced the inflation report four days ago, and the forecast for the end of 2021 at 12.2 percent.

A chief economist at TÜSIAD, also predicted that inflation would rise further, looking at the increase in producer prices.
