Russia Threatens another country: We might annex separatist regions in Georgia

MEDVEDEV RUSSIA STATEMENT

Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former President and one of the closest figures to Putin, stated that Russia could annex the separatist regions in Georgia.

In an article published in a newspaper, Former Russian President Medvedev, used the words, “The idea of joining Russia is still quite popular in the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions.” Medvedev, who has become one of the most firm political voices in the country since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said, “If there are good reasons for annexation, it’s likely to be implemented.”

MOSCOW RECOGNIZED INDEPENDENCE OF SAID REGIONS IN 2008

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia lost control over the aforementioned regions. Moscow recognized the independence of these regions in 2008, following its military response to Georgia’s attempt to regain control over South Ossetia by force.

POSSIBILITY OF GEORGIA’S NATO MEMBERSHIP BRINGING UP THE TENSION

Although Russia’s relations with Georgia have softened since then, Medvedev accused the West of creating tension by bringing up the possibility of Georgia’s NATO membership.

In his article commemorating the 15th anniversary of the recognition of the regions’ independence, Medvedev referred to a potential annexation by stating, “If our concerns come closer to fruition, we won’t wait.” (Int’l Media)
