SALIH_SKALThere are not “so” many Turks sitting on top of the world, in business, sports, art, etc.

Mr. Salih ÇENE, a professional in the tourism industry with a real “HIGH” reputation globally was elected as director of SKAL Int’l in September 2011.

The news goes as follows;

After serving at all levels for the last 32 years, immediate past Councilor for Turkey and a senior tourism professional Salih Cene has been elected as the Director of Skal International (SI).

The election took place today at Skal International (SI) Annual Congress which is taking place in Turku/Finland between 18 and 23 September.

Salih Cene said, “I believe that Skal International should play an important role in developments and changes in tourism. I agree that Skal should be a trusted voice in the tourism industry and should emphasise responsible tourism. In order to take our place as a trusted advisory body,   Skal’s status should be well explained to the world of tourism.”

“The most important asset that differentiates Skal International from other organizations is its membership mosaic. Not only its presence in five continents and over 90 countries, but also its wide range of membership categories that no other tourism organization has under one roof (tour operators, hoteliers, airline representatives, guides, tourism press and many more).

This wide representation should make Skal a trusted voice within World Tourism, especially in two areas.  Skal could use this position to set:

–  the “Code of Ethics” in the Travel & Tourism Industry.
–  the principles of business between various sectors of the Travel & Tourism Industry (eg. standards for contracts and operational rules between Travel Trade, Hotels, Airlines, etc.)

By achieving these two missions, Skal may also become the arbitrator in national and international disputes in the Travel & Tourism Industry.

About Salih CeneSalih Cene was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1950. He started his professional career in 1969 as a receptionist, working in the Tusan and Hilton Hotels Groups in Turkey. From 1996, he became General Director of the Sun Zeynep hotel and then Otium hotel chain, again returning to private practice as a consultant in 2006.

His present work enables him to actively employ his experience in aspects of the hospitality industry and, beside Skal International, he is a founder member and member of other national and international associations and institutes (such as the Professional Hotel Managers Association,  Institute of Hospitality).

Salih is a family man with young children. He enjoys playing tennis, basketball, volleyball, horse-riding, travelling, and has visited 55 countries in a professional and private capacity. The editor’s note: The editor of this site would like to take the opportunity to mention herewith that SALIH is a very good friend of his from high school (Kadıköy Maarif Koleji) and he is certainly proud to have such a friend. The writer has known him since 1962 and  is well informed about the extraordinary effort he has spent to pave his way up and right to the top of the tourism world for decades.

If Salih is involved in an initiative as a professional you can lay back and rest your mind without having to worry if anything would go wrong etc.. We believe SKAL is very lucky to have him on the team..

What is Skål?

Skål is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.

The first Club was founded in 1932 in Paris by travel managers, following an educational tour of Scandinavia. The idea of international goodwill and friendship grew and, in 1934, the “Association Internationale des Skål Clubs” was formed with Florimond Volckaert as its first President, who is considered the “Father of Skål”.

Skål International today has approximately 20,000 members in 450 Clubs throughout 85 nations. Most activities occur at local level, moving up through National Committees, under the umbrella of Skål International, headquartered at the General Secretariat in Torremolinos, Spain.

Skål International is governed by an Executive Committee of seven members, elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly, held during the World Congress, hosted by a different country each year. This allows members first-hand observation of the travel and tourism potential around the world.
