Social networking site Twitter blocked in Turkey on Thursday midnight

Turkey blocked social networking site Twitter only hours after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to ‘eradicate’ it in a speech in an election campaign rally in Bursa province.

“We now have a court order. We’ll eradicate Twitter,” said the PM hours before access to the social networking site was cut. The Communication Technologies Institution (BTK) listed three court rulings and a decision of a prosecutor on its website as the reason of the move.

The outage caused strong domestic and international reaction. Country’s President Abdullah Gul was among the ban breakers, who tweeted as follows on Friday: “A total shutdown of social media platforms cannot be approved…”
