Statement from Minister: “Will family physicians not be allowed to prescribe medication any more”

Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu addressed the recent discussions regarding the family medicine regulation, dismissing claims that family physicians would no longer be able to prescribe medication. Memişoğlu clarified, “The new family medicine regulation issued by the Ministry of Health does not interfere with family physicians’ diagnostic and treatment capabilities, nor does it revoke their freedom to write prescriptions.”
Emphasizing the significance of integrating family medicine into a functional chain of healthcare services, Minister Memişoğlu added, “We have prepared a regulation and shared it with the public. In time, this regulation will be seen as beneficial for both citizens and healthcare workers.”
NEW REGULATION DOES NOT REMOVE THEIR RIGHT TO PRESCRIBE MEDICINE
Addressing the “cannot prescribe medication” claims, he noted that some social media platforms have suggested that family physicians would face salary cuts if they prescribed medication. He said, “The new regulation does not interfere with the diagnostic or treatment authority of family physicians, nor does it remove their right to prescribe.”
The Ministry is actively promoting rational medication practices. Family physicians who contribute to these practices receive additional incentives to their salaries.
Regarding integration, Memişoğlu added, “We are creating appointment slots in hospitals specifically for family physicians and allowing them to schedule appointments for their patients. We are committed to supporting family physicians who provide exemplary care, increasing their earnings, and honoring their essential role in healthcare.”
