Surprising decision from Korean Air… Passengers to be weighed before boarding the plane

According to a report in South Korean media, passengers flying with Korean Air will be asked to step on a scale before boarding the plane in the coming weeks. The decision was made to assist regulators in Seoul in updating aircraft weight and balance standards.

Weighing stations will be set up at Gimpo Airport in Seoul for domestic passengers from August 28 to September 6, and at Incheon Airport for international passengers from September 8 to 19. According to media, the airline will record the weight of each passenger and their carry-on baggage, and these records will be submitted to the country’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

The ministry will then use this data to calculate the average weight of a typical passenger, which will be used in the preparation of seating arrangements and regulations regarding how much extra fuel an aircraft needs to carry. Airline personnel emphasized that overweight passengers will not have to pay more, and all collected data will be anonymized.
