Statement from scientific board member about first case of monkeypox in Turkey

Prof. Dr. Serap Şimşek Yavuz, a member of the Scientific Board of Turkey has made statements about monkey pox cases that has reached 21 countries within 20 days.

Prof. Dr. Yavuz said “Turkey is a transit country for international travel and therefore one of the high-risk geographies. In case of disease is detected as the first case in our country, a quarantine of approximately 4 weeks would be necessary for the healing process.

“THERE IS AN EPIDEMIC, BUT WE DON’T EXPECT IT TO TURN INTO A PANDEMIC”

The professor also gave important information about the monkey pox epidemic and pointed out that during the 20 days since the first case was detected in the UK on May 7, new cases have been detected in exactly 21 countries and used the following statements:

“Although a major pandemic such as the Corona virus is not expected, the biggest problem here is that because the virus can also pass through animal hosts, it can become difficult to control. In 20 days, cases were detected in 21 countries. This shows us that there is quite an epidemic. We also don’t know exactly its true size. This is only the cases that have been caught, cases caught by countries with a good surveillance system.

It is estimated that there are actually many more cases than are known. According to the available data, the pandemic capacity is not considered to be too high. Because it cannot be transmitted very effectively by breathing, or it is considered that it has no transmission in the asymptomatic period. Since it is a DNA virus, it is predicted that it will not undergo many mutations. But, of course, microorganisms need to be closely monitored.
