Strategic Importance of Homs and Recent Developments in Syria

The conflict in Syria has increasingly centered around the city of Homs. On December 5, armed groups led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), after taking control of Hama, began advancing toward Homs. While the Syrian government has dismissed claims that the army has withdrawn from Homs as “baseless,” local sources suggest that the Syrian army has indeed pulled back from the city. The government in Damascus, however, maintains that the army is still present in the region and has reinforced its positions. Clashes continue in critical areas linking Homs and Hama provinces.

The strategic significance of Homs lies in its location in western Syria, positioned along vital transportation routes. Homs sits on the main highway connecting the capital, Damascus, to the coastal cities of Latakia and Tartus. Therefore, controlling Homs is crucial for securing logistical and defense lines for the Syrian army. Losing Homs could sever the land connection between Damascus and the regime-controlled coastal areas, leading to serious logistical challenges.

Armed groups, advancing towards Homs, are getting closer to the capital, Damascus. If Homs falls, it will weaken the Syrian government’s defense position and could dramatically shift the balance of the war. HTS claims that they are now just 10 kilometers from Homs and continue to make progress.
