Taiwan crisis: Chinese warplanes take off, military tension grows

Tension in the Pacific has reached a peak due to today’s possible visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan. Chinese warplanes and ships have surrounded the island of Taiwan as of this morning, and claims that China may launch missiles at Taiwan have also raised military tensions.

The expectation that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will visit Taiwan today has led to a real crisis between China and the United States. Taiwanese media reports citing diplomatic sources suggest that Pelosi is expected to land in Taiwan today, while the Chinese government which has repeatedly warned the United States with harsh messages, has sent fighter jets to the island whose independence is not recognized by China.

Sources told Reuters news agency that Chinese fighter jets were flying around the island of Taiwan and the tension was very high. China’s warships are also stationed in the region, it said. Chinese aircraft are constantly making rounds near the island with tactical maneuvers, and the Taiwanese military is also waiting on alert, the sources said.

TAIWAN’S MILITARY IS ON ALERT: ’CHINA MAY LAUNCH MISSILES’

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said yesterday that China would take drastic measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity and that the Chinese military would watch Pelosi’s visit, adding: “We are prepared for any eventuality. Let them wait and see what we will do if they dare.” Zhao also said today that they had been in touch with the United States on the matter.
