AIRBNB TURKEY TAX PROBLEMS

Recently, short-term rental applications have been increasingly preferred, especially by homeowners. Those who don’t want to engage in long-term rentals are turning to this method, which they find easier and more profitable, especially through Airbnb. However, experts are warning: Tax authorities could come knocking at your door.

One of today’s popular accommodation platforms, Airbnb (AirBedandBreakfast), allows guests in many countries to rent rooms, apartments, or houses for the number of days they need.

The interest in this platform, which has also become quite popular in Turkey, has brought up the tax aspect of the business. The method of ‘short-term rental’, which is quite attractive for homeowners and especially guests, brings along not only its advantages but also tax obligations. Tax experts have warned many homeowners who rent out their homes or rooms through this method about their obligations to avoid problems in the future, and provided important information about the issues of interest.

They warn homeowners that offering a residence for daily or weekly use is considered a commercial activity by the Revenue Administration Presidency, and add following; “Those who rent out their homes in this manner should educate themselves about the issues that are crucial for avoiding future problems with the Tax Authority, and it would be beneficial for them to take into account the points we have mentioned.”
