The rescue excavation and cleaning works started for the unearthing of the “Halicarnassus Walls” in Bodrum are continuing. When the works are completed, the 7.5-kilometer walls will be brought back to tourism.

The Halicarnassus Western Fortification Walls Rescue Excavation and Cleaning Works Project supervised by Bodrum Underwater and Archaeological Museum is being carried out with contribution of the Bodrum Municipality and the Academy of Mediterranean Countries (AKADEMIA) Foundation. A large number of workers and archaeologists are engaged in the project.

The consultant of the project, the Head of the Department of Archaeology of MUGLA “SITKI KOÇMAN” University” said that the fortifications had been built as part of a very special defense and most of them had been protected to date.

“FORTIFICATIONS STILL STANDING”

The consultant noted that since Halicarnassus had remained under the modern settlement, most of its ruins had been destroyed, but some of the fortifications were still standing. He said when the Bodrum bus station and industry were moved, the ruins under it, the stadium and other temples would come to light,

He also stated that there would be an awareness about cultural heritage with the work done
