The South Ossetian war is in its 14th year: Georgia calls on Russia to ‘withdraw its troops’

The Georgian Foreign Ministry called on Russia to “withdraw its troops from Georgian territory” on the occasion of 14th anniversary of the clashes between Russia and Georgia in 2008 also known as the South Ossetian war.

A written statement from the Georgian Foreign Ministry said that Russia had attacked Georgia in August 2008. It also said following, “Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), which are the indivisible territories of Georgia, were illegally occupied by Russia and became known as its so-called free states.”

Russia has not complied with the ceasefire agreement signed with the mediation of the European Union (EU) in 2008 to date, the statement said. It went on to say, “Russia does not comply with the ceasefire agreement signed through the EU on August 12, 2008 and expands its illegal control over the occupied territories.”

A call for Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Russian Federation to stop illegal and provocative actions against Georgia, respect Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, fulfill its obligations to the EU under the armistice agreement of August 12, 2008, withdraw its military forces from the territory of Georgia and change the decision on the so-called independent recognition of the occupied territories.”
