Turkey’s efforts to join the Eurofighter Typhoon user community have taken a significant step forward with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Turkish Ministry of National Defense and the UK Ministry of Defence.

The agreement, finalized during the IDEF 2025 defense exhibition in Istanbul, was signed by Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and his UK counterpart John Healey.

While not yet a full contract, the memorandum signals strong mutual intent and formally acknowledges Turkey’s status as a prospective Eurofighter user. The jets, which are co-produced by a European consortium and finalized in the UK, are being considered in a 40 aircraft package for the Turkish Air Force.

According to a statement from the Turkish Ministry of Defense, the agreement marks continued progress in export discussions and represents a critical milestone in Turkey’s pursuit of advanced air combat capabilities. The ministry emphasized that talks with other Eurofighter partner nations are ongoing, and no final commitments have yet been made.

The statement described the agreement as a step toward a “new era” in bilateral defense relations, highlighting shared goals for deeper cooperation and reciprocal acquisition of cutting-edge defense technologies. Both ministers welcomed the move as a positive development and committed to completing the necessary arrangements as swiftly as possible.

Relations Between UK and Turkey

In the past few months, ties between the UK and Türkiye have deepened markedly, particularly in defense and trade. Both countries have formalized defense industry collaboration—including the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement talks and creation of a joint Türkiye UK Defense Industry Council. A recent UK national security review emphasized Turkey’s strategic importance to NATO efforts and bilateral military integration.
