TURKEY MILITARY OPERATION

Turkey has set a date for its military operation against the PKK terrorist organization in Iraq, according to sources speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, a newspaper (in Arabic) based in the UK.

As discussions and visits regarding security issues between Turkey and Iraq have been ongoing, sources speaking to the newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, founded in 1978, made some claims.

These sources conveyed Ankara’s plans to eliminate the PKK terrorist organization. There were also claims about the involvement of the Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi in the operation in Iraq.

A Turkish official speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat mentioned that a part of Ankara’s plan is to prepare for changes that will occur after the war and to demonstrate determination towards achieving zero security issues in the region, especially in Iraq.

DETAILS OF THE AGREEMENT SHARED

Iraqi sources speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat stated that before Fidan Bağdat’s visit, Iraq was briefed about Turkey’s plan, including the approval of Iran’s new stance regarding the PKK.

Another Iraqi source mentioned that when official consultations began, “everything was ready, including the zero hour.” Describing the plan between the two countries as “unprecedented,” the source added that Hashd al-Shaabi would be present in certain areas to provide support.

“COULD BEGIN IN JUNE”

A Turkish diplomatic source denied interpretations linking Turkey’s military operations in Iraq to the situation in Gaza. The source speculated that the operations could begin in June.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Baghdad is expected in April. Turkish sources stated that Erdogan would sign an agreement involving the establishment of a joint operations command center and a buffer zone. (SOZCU)
