A cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, USA. The impact caused the bridge to collapse. It is believed that there were numerous vehicles and around 20 people in the water. Rescue operations are ongoing.

According to Fox Baltimore, the 3 km long bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed into the water following the collision with a cargo ship belonging to the Synergy Marine Group and flying the Singaporean flag.

The New York Times reported that the extent of the damage to the bridge was not yet known.

In a statement on Twitter, the Maryland Transportation Authority stated, “Due to the incident, all lanes on the bridge are closed in both directions. Traffic is being diverted elsewhere.”

The Baltimore Fire Department stated that they estimated there were numerous vehicles and around 20 people in the water. Rescue operations are underway.

Following the collapse of the bridge, a state of emergency was declared.
