Turkey: Tough Road to New Constitution

"Share this post on social media, spread the news"

OPINIONSoon after the elections in Turkey many experts have had the impression the road to writing a new constitution will be much tougher than expected.

The court has put a ban on some newly elected lawmakers who have been held in jail without an imprisonment sentence, for allegations of organizing a coup against the government. The reasons disclosed by the court has not made everybody happy and it is very likely the new parliament will experience very tough times as will the politicians on the way to making a new constitution that would please the majority.

The ruling government in specific has been blaming much on the current constitution for a long time now. The opposition on the other hand has shown willingness to cooperate in the process of writing the new constitution. Obviously these two rival parties now stand a strong opportunity (if not an obligation) to contribute to a healthy political and democratic future for this young population.

A great majority of voters now expect the authorities to lift the ban on elected deputies (in jail currently, without a sentence) so that the will of the population is reflected to the parliament.

Clear enough the greatest task is on the government’s shoulder to make it happen by finding a way through.
