Turkey Weather Forecast for May 16, 2025: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds in Some Regions

Turkey’s Meteorological Service has issued several important warnings for Friday, May 16. Many provinces, especially in the western half of the country, are expected to face impactful weather conditions, including thunderstorms, strong winds that could reach storm levels, and widespread dust transport. Both yellow and orange weather alerts are in place, urging caution across several regions.

A mix of intense weather events is forecast to unfold across western and central Turkey. Heavy rainfall is expected during the early hours in parts of Thrace, particularly in Kırklareli, Edirne, and Tekirdağ. These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms. Meanwhile, powerful south-southwesterly winds will sweep across Marmara, the Aegean, the western Mediterranean, and the western parts of Central Anatolia — with gusts reaching between 50 to 90 km/h, particularly near coastal areas.

Temperatures on the Rise

As weather systems shift eastward, temperatures are climbing in central and eastern regions — increasing by 3 to 5°C compared to previous days. However, due to cloud cover and scattered rain, western provinces will experience more moderate temperatures.

Marmara Region

The Marmara region is in for an unsettled day, with strong southerly winds, localized showers, and widespread dust transport. Gusts could reach storm-force levels, especially in western areas such as Çanakkale, Balıkesir, and parts of Edirne. These conditions may lead to disruptions in transportation, decreased visibility, and minor structural hazards like roof damage or falling branches.

İstanbul will experience mostly cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain showers in the afternoon. Temperatures will be around 26°C, but the gusty winds and dusty air may make it feel cooler and less comfortable, particularly in open areas or near the Bosphorus. Commuters and outdoor workers should be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions.

In the northwestern provinces like Kırklareli, Edirne, and Tekirdağ, early morning thunderstorms are expected, tapering off by midday as the system moves eastward.

Spotlight on the Aegean Region

The Aegean region is in for a cloudy and blustery day. While many provinces — including İzmir, Manisa, and Uşak — are likely to see passing showers or brief thunderstorms, Muğla and Denizli are expected to stay dry. Winds will be a defining feature, with strong to gale-force gusts affecting both inland and coastal zones. Dust transport is also a concern throughout the region.

Muğla Forecast: Muğla will escape the rain but not the wind or dust. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies, a high of 27°C, and strong southwesterly winds, particularly along the coast. With dust expected to linger in the air, masks are recommended for those spending time outdoors.

Mediterranean Region

Unstable weather is expected across much of the Mediterranean coast. While some areas will remain dry, localized showers are forecast, especially during the morning hours. Winds from the south will strengthen during the day, and in some provinces, dust transport could briefly reduce visibility.

Antalya is expecting scattered morning showers with generally overcast skies throughout the day. Temperatures will be mild, around 23°C, but strong southerly winds may affect outdoor activities, especially along the coast. Residents should also be mindful of brief dust episodes, which could cause discomfort for those with respiratory issues.
