Turkey’s Hidden Paradises: Traces of History at Eğil Castle: Palace Ruins Found

Diyarbakır’s Eğil district attracts attention due to the belief that the prophets Zulkifl and Elyesa, mentioned in the Quran, are buried in this historic region. As a result of ongoing archaeological excavations at Eğil Castle, palace ruins have been discovered.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Vecihi Özkaya from Dicle University’s Archaeology Department, the excavations have focused on the palace area at the summit of the castle. Özkaya stated that Eğil Castle was not merely a defensive structure but held deep historical and cultural significance. He mentioned the discovery of an “Assyrian cylinder seal” during the excavation at the Rock Church, which proves the political presence of the Assyrians.

PALACE AREA ON CASTLE WAS ACTIVE IN 8TH CENTURY BC

Özkaya pointed out that during the excavations, it was determined that the palace area on the castle had been active in the 8th century BC and expanded with additions during the Artuklu and Ottoman periods. He also added that traces from the Artuklu and Ottoman eras were found in the palace area.

Özkaya stated that the Inner Castle area, where significant structures related to the administration were found, contained buildings with foundations carved into the rock. He indicated that the presence of Ottoman traces in the castle highlights the importance of Eğil during the Ottoman period.

WHEN EXCAVATIONS REACH CERTAIN LEVEL REGION WILL ATTRACT MANY VISITORS

The Eğil district has great tourism potential with its historical and cultural richness. Özkaya believes that when the excavations reach a certain level, the region will attract a large number of visitors. Furthermore, Eğil District Governor and Acting Mayor Volkan Hülür stated that intensive efforts were underway to promote Eğil. Hülür expressed that Eğil would stand out for both religious and historical tourism potential and they expect to welcome many visitors once the excavations are completed.

In summary, the excavations at Eğil Castle in Diyarbakır’s Eğil district have once again revealed the historical richness of the region. Experts believe that these discoveries will increase the region’s tourism potential.
