Turkey’s ruling AK Party discusses potential ‘Early Election’ in fall of 2027

According to reports from Ankara, there are discussions within the AKP regarding the potential date for the next election. It is speculated that the election might be scheduled for the fall of 2027.

CHP (Republican People’s Party) Chairman Özgür Özel frequently reiterates the call for an early election with his slogan “If there’s no living / economy, there’s an election,” and recently stated, “If an early election is called within the next year, CHP will not sign off on it.”

Nefes Newspaper columnist Nuray Babacan discussed what was being discussed behind closed doors in AKP circles. She wrote, “The AKP faces two choices for the election: either going to the polls ‘without Erdoğan’ or ‘without a strong economy.’ To avoid these two extreme scenarios, they are looking for options that could benefit them.”

IF ELECTION IS HELD IN 2028 ERDOGAN CANNOT RUN FOR PRESIDENT

In her article, Babacan explained: “If the elections are held in 2028, it means that Tayyip Erdoğan cannot be a candidate. Since changing the constitution seems unlikely, this is an inevitable outcome. The ruling party is planning for an early election, which it believes the opposition party cannot reject without facing accusations of trying to avoid the election. In this regard, the AKP has a point.

Both the ruling and opposition parties are planning for an early election at the most advantageous time.

AK PARTY HOPES ECONOMY WILL IMPROVE BEFORE ELECTION

For some time, AKP members have been making plans behind closed doors. Their strategy is not to hold an ‘early election,’ but rather an ‘advanced election.’ They hope the economic situation will improve, and the results of economic policies will be visible, as well as potential developments in Syria that could benefit them. The plan was to wait until 2028, allowing time for the economy to improve and for Erdoğan to be eligible to run again. Then, a few months before the regular election, the AKP could push for a parliamentary decision to hold elections, gaining an advantage.
