An Istanbul orthodontist has brought a new concept of plastic surgery and dentistry to the country as part of her quest to offer patients a beautiful smile.

Aiming to change the lives of people who suffer from problem teeth, orthodontist Emek Külür offers a variety of specialized medical procedures for a “beautiful smile.” The services include cosmetic surgery, plastic surgery and other professional medical techniques to provide a whole beauty. She recently launched the Smile Design concept in Turkey for the first time.

Külür has been in the dentistry sector for over 16 years as an orthodontist.

“I was always interested in beauty and plastic surgeries, and over time, I became a plastic surgery advisor for my patients. When a patient asks for an appearance change for their teeth, I look at not only teeth but the whole face,” she said during a press conference announcing the Smile Design concept.

To give her patients both cosmetic and medical surgery treatments, she decided to pursue training on plastic surgery practices including Botox techniques.

“Following my research I found out about a new facial design approach named ‘smile design,’ also known as ‘smile studio’ in the United States and ‘smile institute’ in the United Kingdom,” Külür said.

After completing her training at an aesthetic medical center in London, she decided to offer services for people that suffered from not only dentistry problems but also cosmetic issues.

One clinic, whole treatment

Külür’s clinic in Istanbul’s upscale Nişantaşı neighborhood is equipped with an advanced high-tech dental porcelain laboratory, an expert staff, dental ceramists and a cosmetic dermatologist who consider the face as a whole. “Our team, during the process of designing the most appropriate smile for person, examines the teeth, gums, lips and facial structure, all in one,” she said.

Külür said that in designing the smile, the structure of the mouth and teeth as well as all the lines and the neighboring tissues – lips, chin, neck, cheeks and nose – should be examined.

“First, the shape and the color of the teeth are determined, and the procedure is followed by putting in porcelain laminas or full porcelain according to the person’s posture, character, hair and skin color,” she said.

“[Next] is to consider the deformation around the mouth. Loss of tissue in the lips is lightly replaced with dermal materials,” she said.

According to Külür, their main concern is not to create new lips but change the appearance to make the patient look younger. “Some believe actress Angelina Jolie’s lips could fit anyone’s face, but it is not true,” she said.

“Distinctive laugh lines, cheekbones and cheeks that have collapsed are filled with dermal materials in the operations,” Külür said.

While the goal is to realize their patient’s desire, the practice has never been used to create another face and expression, she said.

Male patients demanding aesthetics

Botox is commonly used by physiotherapists in particular to organize muscle functions, but is now used in aesthetic operations as well, she said.

“I fill some lines of the face with Botox to control the muscle movements in order to gain a more beautiful appearance,” she said.

Not only women but also men show interest in aesthetic surgeries, Külür said, but added that many male patients ask that the cosmetic work remain secret.

Külür’s clinic also aims to solve Bruxism, which is characterized by teeth-grinding and teeth-clenching habits that can cause severe headaches and ear pain. The pain results in advanced stages of jaw locking. Dentists use Botox to treat Bruxism dysfunction, she said.
