COVID 19 IN TURKEY

TURKSTAT has postponed the publication of the “Death and Cause of Death Statistics” report for the second time. The statistics, which were also not published last year, would have provided important data pointing to the true extent of the deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) has postponed the publication of the “Statistics of Cause of Death and Mortality” report for the second time. The institution, which has published a statement on the subject, announced that the publication of the newsletter “Life Tables, 2019-2021” will also be postponed.

In the TURKSTAT statement, following was shared: “According to the National Data Release Calendar, the news release ‘Cause of Death and Mortality Statistics, 2021’, which is scheduled to be published on June 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., has been postponed due to the continuation of work on the administrative records of the Institutions from which the statistics were obtained.”

“The publication of the newsletter ‘Life Tables, 2019-2021’, which is scheduled to be published at 10:00 on September 21, 2022, where mortality statistics will be used in the analysis processes, will also be postponed.”

IT WAS ALSO POSTPONED LAST YEAR

TURKSTAT had postponed the report “Death and Cause of Death Statistics, 2020” last year, as well.

In 2019, there were 435 thousand 941 deaths, 1 million 186 thousand 560 births in Turkey, 677 thousand 42 people emigrated from abroad to Turkey in 2019, while 330 thousand 289 people emigrated from Turkey to abroad.

However, the publication of mortality and migration statistics for 2020 (the year of the pandemic) was postponed by the Turkstat. Although 1 year has passed, it has still not been published.

Responding to questions from media about why the 2020 statistics were not published, TURKSTAT threw the ball to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Health. TURKSTAT, cited the fact “the work on administrative records in institutions had not yet been completed”.
