U-turn from Swedish Prime Minister: We will not extradite them to Turkey

In Sweden, which will go to the polls tomorrow, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has made statements. With the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Turkey had vetoed Sweden’s membership in NATO, which wanted to join the alliance. In June, the parties had come together in Madrid, the capital of Spain, and Turkey was convinced after which a memorandum of understanding was signed.

Sweden, which responded positively to Turkey’s call for cooperation in the fight against terrorism, had signaled that it would send the names that Ankara wanted extradited. While announcing that they would cooperate with Turkey, Swedish Prime Minister Andersson, had also criticized the Left Party which posed with the rags of a terrorist organization.

But Andersson made statements hours before the election. Andersson said, “We will continue to defend the rights of the Kurds. We will not hand over any Kurds to Turkey.”

Speaking to Rudaw, Andersson said, “We will not hand over any Kurds who are Swedish citizens to Turkey. Anyone who has not committed a terrorist act is under the protection of Swedish law. As long as I am the Prime Minister of Sweden, I will continue to defend the rights of the Kurds. According to the agreement we have made with Turkey, no Kurd with a Swedish identity card will be returned.”
