Visitor Capacity at Göbeklitepe Set to Grow with New Investments

Göbeklitepe — a UNESCO World Heritage site widely described as the “zero point of history” — is preparing for major improvements. With construction underway on a new visitor center, rest areas, walking paths, and expanded parking, the goal is clear: increase both capacity and visitor satisfaction.

A Rising Interest in the World’s Oldest Known Temple Site

Located in Şanlıurfa’s Haliliye district, just 18 km from the city center, Göbeklitepe was first identified during surface surveys in 1963. Since then, interest from both domestic and international travelers has grown steadily.

Annual visitor numbers have now reached 1 million, and new investments aim to support and expand this growing demand.

New Facilities Coming Next Year

Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the ongoing projects include a brand-new visitor center, upgraded walking paths, additional rest areas, and a large parking lot.

Once completed next year, these upgrades will offer guests a more comfortable and immersive experience within the ancient site.

“Investments Will Boost Visitor Numbers”

Şanlıurfa Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Aydın Aslan emphasized that the new developments are part of the “Heritage for the Future Project.”
He explained that the enhancements are being made to keep pace with rising visitor numbers and to create a clearer, more accessible site to explore.

Aslan noted:
“We built the new visitor center about 2.5 kilometers below the main site because the old parking and visitor area could no longer handle the crowds. This approach reduces the pressure on Göbeklitepe itself while allowing visitors to enjoy a scenic journey that helps them better understand the natural surroundings. We’ve expanded parking, opened a new visitor center, created café areas, and widened the walking paths to make them accessible for everyone. With these investments, we’ll strengthen the site’s capacity and welcome even more visitors.”

Positive Feedback from Tourism Leaders

Şanlıurfa Tourism Committee President Mehmet Kamil Türkmen expressed satisfaction with the growing global interest in Göbeklitepe.

He stated that the new facilities will encourage longer stays and enhance the overall tourism experience in the region:
“The expansion of services and capacity at Göbeklitepe is a highly appropriate and welcome step. These investments will directly increase both visitor numbers and the length of stay in Şanlıurfa.”
