EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK

Following Donald Trump’s re-election as president, European Central Bank (ECB) officials have warned that Europe must be prepared for a potential trade war. Top official executives shared their opinions in regards to protect the economy against protectionist policies to enter into effect in USA

ECB Governing Council member and Governor of the Bank of Finland, Olli Rehn, along with Austrian National Bank Governor Robert Holzmann, highlighted that the protectionist policies planned by the Trump administration could negatively impact the global economy, and Europe must be better prepared than it was during the trade tensions of 2018.

Trump promises to impose a 10% general tariff on all imports and a 60% tariff on imports from China

Trump had promised to impose a 10% general tariff on all imports and a 60% tariff on imports from China in an effort to reduce the U.S. trade deficit. In his statement in London, Olli Rehn warned that these import tariffs could have damaging consequences for the global economy, emphasizing that current geopolitical competition, particularly among allies, could lead to a harmful new trade war. Rehn also stressed that the ECB should act as a “anchor” for financial stability, urging Europe not to be unprepared as it was during the trade tensions of 2018.

Trump to quickly implement his policies

Robert Holzmann, speaking in Vienna, predicted that Trump would quickly implement his policies. He noted that such policies would likely keep U.S. interest rates and inflation high, which could put global markets—and particularly Europe—under pressure. According to Holzmann, this could increase import costs in the Eurozone, especially in the energy sector, and make it more difficult for the ECB to achieve its 2% inflation target, potentially delaying its progress.

These warnings from ECB officials highlight the need for Europe to prepare more effectively for potential trade barriers under the Trump administration.
