In Turkey, minimum wage and inflation dominate Google searches

Among the terms most frequently searched worldwide on Google Trends, Turkey’s focus on minimum wage and inflation stands out. In Turkey, the prominence of minimum wage, which aligns closely with average earnings, is notable, and the Central Bank also stands out more prominently than in other countries.
In terms of investment, while Bitcoin has captured global interest, gold remains Turkey’s favorite. While Americans are most concerned with taxes and poverty, price hikes continue to resonate strongly with Turkey.
Minimum Wage
The reason why minimum wage has become a focal point in Turkey in recent years is explained by economists as “widespread” and “close to the average.” Google Trends data supports this as well. While minimum wage searches increase towards the end of each year, searches for it in Turkey far exceed those in the U.S. and Germany.
In the detailed regional and temporal data, the province where minimum wage is most frequently searched in Turkey is Tekirdağ. In 2024, searches have surpassed those in 2021 and 2023. In the U.S., Oregon led minimum wage searches, with an increase in 2024. In Germany, Saxony topped the minimum wage searches, particularly in 2023.
Central Bank
When looking at searches for “Central Bank” by country, Turkey again leads by a large margin. Especially in late 2021 and mid-2023, Turkey’s Central Bank has been a popular Google search, while in the U.S. and Germany, interest appears “relatively” low.
However, when central banks are searched by their specific names, the U.S. occasionally surpasses Turkey. For Turkey, it’s “TCMB” (Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey), for the U.S., it’s “Fed,” and for Germany, it’s “Bundesbank.” Interest in these institutions generally spikes during interest rate changes, with both TCMB and Fed frequently appearing on Google.
