WHAT IS THE DAY OF COMBATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ON NOVEMBER 25?

In 1999, the UN General Assembly declared November 25 as the International Day of Struggle against Violence against Women. The reason for the designation of this day as November 25 is based on an incident that occurred in the Dominican Republic in 1960. Three sisters named the Mirabal Brothers, known for their opposition to Rafael Trujillo who ruled the country with a dictatorship, were strangled and beaten to death and brutally murdered days after Trujillo’s statement: “There are two dangers in the country: the Church and the Mirabal Brothers.”

However, the next morning after the murder of the Mirabel brothers, a story appeared in the newspapers saying that these deaths were the result of an accident.

At the Latin American Women’s congress convened in Dominica in 1981; November 25 was recognized as the “International Day of Solidarity and Struggle Against Violence Against Women”. Later, in 1999, the UN declared November 25 the day of the ”International Fight for the Eradication of Violence Against Women”.
