It is a known fact that while many Britons prefer MUGLA region, one of the important tourism centers of Turkey, to spend their holidays, some also buy a house and settle in the region. MUGLA which welcomes a large number of foreign visitors with its high-level accommodation facilities in addition to its natural beauties, has become a favorite of British tourists, especially in the last 10 years.

Quite a few of the British people who come to said region and other touristic districts of Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Datça and Dalaman to spend their holidays end up buying a house and settling down in this area.

Among the foreign citizens who visit Muğla the most, the British are in the first place, the Russians are in the second place and the Germans rank third on the list. They are followed by Ukrainian and Dutch nationals not to forget Russians recently.

Based on statements by some professionals about 2.5 million British tourists come to Turkey annually. About 1.5 million of said tourists prefer Muğla. The area mostly welcomes quite a lot of tourists from the north side of London, from the Manchester area. Marmaris is the most popular destination in the north of England and this seems to have been the case for 20 years.”

ALL STARTED 20 YEARS AGO

Going back in time we see that everything started 20 years ago when tour operators brought to the region about 5 thousand British people. This apparently corresponds to connection of almost 20 years.

An interesting point is, English culture is practiced here, in Muğla. If you go to Antalya, you will most likely not find an English breakfast that easily, whereas one will likely find an English breakfast in every hotel in Marmaris. So it seems that they prefer Marmaris because it keeps the British culture alive.” Certainly DALAMAN is another area preferred by British citizens. The observation is that the British will not easily change their preferences and an increasing number of British people visit the city every year because they love the region. Also it is also shared that the British generally do not like the “all inclusive” system, they prefer Muğla because of its naturalness and quality.

As for buying property in Turkey, professionals point out that Muğla is at the top of the provinces where the British have acquired the most property.

BRITS ARE VERY COMFORTABLE IN MUGLA

A professional from TÜRSAB Bodrum says the UK is the country that brings the largest share in the tourism market of Muğla.

Same person says that Bodrum has made a leap with the British in the early periods of tourism adding “Bodrum has developed with the British market for a long time. This is the tourism reality of our region. It’s a region where the British are very comfortable with the weather, with the human texture. They were extremely satisfied with their holidays here. This satisfaction has also been the biggest triggering factor in owning a home here.” To parallel this information, sector professionals report that about 3 thousand 500 British people live in Fethiye.

MAIN REASONS WHY BRITS PREFER FETHIYE

Same experts share three main reasons why the British prefer Fethiye as follows:

“One of the main reasons for this is that the Turks are quite friendly. There is a constant closed weather in England. The fact that there is a sunny and warm weather in Turkey increases the interest of the British here. Another reason is that with the strengthening of the British pound, their purchasing power is very high. While 4 people can eat for a certain amount of money in UK, 12 people can dine with same amount in Turkey.”

SOME STATEMENT BY FOREIGNERS LIVING IN TURKEY

As for some statements made in regards by foreign friends living in Turkey, it would be nice to share following down below

72-year-old retired policeman W.D.,  a British national living in Bodrum for instance has said that he decided to settle in the district where he came for a vacation 20 years ago. Stating that he lived alone in Bodrum, he said, “Bodrum and Muğla are very beautiful. I walk on the beach every morning in Bodrum. Then I come to places I know and spend time.”

Expressing that the Turkish people are very friendly and get along well with them, he said, “I suggest everyone to come here. Especially the people who live here are very friendly and nice. I don’t think you’ll be unhappy here. I have a house here. I’m thinking of spending my remaining life here.”

Another person M.A. (56), who preferred Fethiye for three years for the holiday, stated that he had come to the district with his wife and friends. Emphasizing that the weather and sunshine of Fethiye were very beautiful and that they felt safe here, he noted the following: “We are a family that loves traveling. We have also been to other places in the world. We’ve been to places in Europe where women can’t walk on their own. In the places we went, there were people trying to lure us to their store. And we don’t experience that here. Turkey is a much safer place than the UK. There is a very nice interest and friendliness here. You can’t eat such good food at such good prices anywhere in the world. There are many activities that can be done in Fethiye from sports to history.”

And another person R.D. (48) who lives in Fethiye, reported that she and her husband had settled here 2 years ago because they loved the district they came to on vacation for 14 years. (20.01.2023)
