Winter Tire Obligation Extended to 5 Months in Turkey

New Regulation from the Ministry of Transport
Turkey has officially extended the mandatory winter tire period. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the rule will now apply from November 15 to April 15. With this change, the requirement has been stretched from four months to five months. The regulation is mandatory for all passenger and freight vehicles traveling on intercity roads. Although private car owners are not legally required to follow this rule, the minister strongly advised them to use winter tires for safety.
Why Winter Tires Matter
Winter tires provide better road grip when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius. Minister Uraloğlu reminded that the updated regulation was published in the Official Gazette. He also underlined that provincial governors may extend the period by one month at the beginning or end depending on regional weather conditions.
Penalties and Requirements
Drivers who fail to comply will face a fine of 5,856 lira. For heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, tankers, and trailers, all axle tires must be winter tires. For vans, minibuses, and passenger cars, all tires must also comply. Even if a tire is replaced during travel, the new one must be a winter tire. Spiked tires, designed only for icy surfaces, are accepted as an alternative. However, having snow chains does not replace the obligation, although carrying chains, wedges, and towing ropes remains compulsory.
Safety First on Winter Roads
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that drivers should always be prepared with the right equipment. Proper tires and winter gear help ensure safe journeys in challenging conditions, preventing accidents and delays during the harsh months ahead.
