Following quite a successful performance in UEFA league in 2013, Turkish football team Fenerbahçe was knocked out of the UEFA Cup after a bitter 3-1 defeat against Benfica of Portugal, in a thrilling semifinal second-leg match at Luz stadium, in Lisbon on Thursday.

The Turkish side which came to Lisbon with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Istanbul displayed a very ineffective performance against a very strong Benfica and experienced difficulty trying to keep the ball away from its goal.

Fenerbahce did not manage to make the best of the 1-0 victory from the first game and Benfica moved on to the final.

The top striker of the host team, Cardozo scored 2 goals for Benfica and Gaetan scored the other goal which brought them the opportunity of the final game in Amsterdam. The Portuguese team is now to challenge Chelsea, who crushed Basel 5-2 on aggregate after a 3-1 win in London.

Fenerbahçe raised hopes with an equalizer from the penalty kick by Kuyt bringing the score to 1 each. But this did not last long and Cardozo put an end to the hopes of the guest team with his first goal which was followed by his second goal in the second half.

It was obvious that Benfica turned out to be far too strong for Fenerbahçe not to forget the missing top players of the guest team.
