43 people lose lives in train disaster in Greece: Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigns

TRAIN ACCIDENT IN GREECE

It was reported that 43 people had lost their lives and 85 people had been injured in the train accident in Greece. Following the train accident, Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned. President Erdogan sent a message of condolence to Greek President Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Mikotakis due to the accident.

A passenger train and a freight train collided in the Tempi district north of Larisa, Greece. It was recorded that 43 people had lost their lives and 85 people were injured in the accident where some of the passenger train’s cars derailed and the front cars burned. It is estimated that about 20 people are missing.

After the accident, the passengers on the train were taken by buses to Thessaloniki, Larisa and Katerini. The station chief on duty was detained in connection with the accident, representatives of the Hellenic Train company, the railway operator, also testified.

TRANSPORT MINISTER KARAMANLIS RESIGNS

Following the train accident, Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned. Karamanlis said that his resignation was a “duty” in memory of people who died unjustly.

Karamanlis said, “Unfortunately, our (renovation) efforts were not enough to prevent such an accident. When something tragic like this happens, we can’t carry on as if nothing happened.”
