The dean of the Faculty of Aquaculture of Akdeniz University (AU) said that more than 100 invasive species had affected the seas off the coast of Turkey, 67 of which reached the Gulf of Antalya.

The Dean said the number of species which came from the Red Sea and invaded the Mediterranean increased as a result of combined factors such as blocking of cold water reaching the Mediterranean due to global warming and widening and deepening of dams on the Nile River in the Suez Canal.

Recalling that exotic migrations in the Mediterranean Sea came from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea, the scientist noted that among the species, different types of shrimp, especially balloons and lionfish, oysters, sea urchins, as well as, finally, dec lagos fish were added to the list.
