AK Party proposes amendment to Animal Rights Law: Unclaimed stray animals will be put to sleep

Breaking news… The AK Party has put the issue of “putting unclaimed stray animals to sleep” on its agenda with the amendment to be made to the Animal Rights Law. The proposed law on stray animals is scheduled to be signed into law before the Parliament closes.

The AK Party, which has also taken into account the demand from the public after the recent attacks of unclaimed stray animals, plans to bring the ‘sleeping’ method applied in the UK, Italy and Portugal to the Parliament with a legislative proposal.

AK Party sources speaking to EKONOMI pointed out that no results had been achieved with methods such as care, neutering and shelter applied so far, noting that the increase in stray dog populations continued and the issue had started to become an important problem in terms of community health.

How will the concerned model be implemented?

While municipalities have responsibilities in this regard, AK Party officials pointed out that the problem exceeded the capacity of municipalities and noted that with the new regulation, each municipality would post ads for adoption on the website they will set up by taking photos of the dog as much as the capacity in their shelters. Photos of dogs will be kept on the website for a certain period of time, this period is planned to be 30 days. Dogs that are not adopted within 30 days will be put to sleep by injection. After the dogs that are adopted and put to sleep, new dogs will be brought to the shelters that are vacated, the process will be operated in this way. There will be no distinction between rural or urban in the legal arrangement to be made.

AK Party sources described the method of sedation as “to be performed under conditions of mercy, painlessly, using a needle”.
