After Ankara and the Damascus administration expressed the possibility of direct talks, eyes were turned to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and President Tayyip Erdogan. AKP Deputy Chairman Hayati Yazici noted that the two leaders could meet and said, “I am not in a position to say that it will never happen. It starts from somewhere, the level can rise, God willing.”

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had said, “We need to somehow understand the opposition and the regime in Syria. Otherwise, there will be no lasting peace, we always say this.” After this statement MHP Leader Devlet Bahceli, the partner of the government, also supported Cavusoglu.

Cavusoglu’s words in this direction were met with a reaction by the opponents of Assad in Syria, protests were organized.

In a later statement, the foreign minister suggested that his words had been distorted and said, “I used the word “reconciliation”. We have said decisively that reconciliation between the regime and the opposition is essential for a lasting stability and peace in Syria,” he said.
