As the weather cools, variety of fish at markets increases, prices of “Anchovy and Bonito” also change

With the cold weather in the Black Sea, the variety of fish at the markets has increased. In the first weeks in Rize, baby bonito (palamut), which was abundant, has given way to anchovy (hamsi) and other fish varieties. The price of hamsi, which is sold for 100 Turkish lira, has reached a size of about 15 centimeters.
HAMSİ PRICE DROPS TO 100 LIRA
The general fishing ban on bottom trawl and purse seine nets, which started on April 15, ended on September 1. After completing their preparations for the new season, fishermen set out to sea, saying “Vira bismillah” (Let’s set sail). Last week, the snow that affected the highland regions and reached the seas increased the variety and abundance of fish at the markets. With the cold weather, hamsi, which was plentiful in fishermen’s nets, is being sold at 100 lira per kilogram. The abundant palamut season, which was fruitful in the first weeks of the season, has given way to other fish varieties, especially hamsi, as well as istavrit, mezgit, çinekop etc.. Hamsi, which has reached a size of about 15 centimeters, is being sold at 100 lira per kilogram, while palamut is being sold for 150 lira and sargan for 200 lira.
“WHEN CUSTOMERS COME TO THE MARKET, THEY LOOK FOR HAMSİ”
Fisherman Sönmez Birinci said, “This week, hamsi is abundant. All types of fish are plentiful. Hamsi comes from our sea. Hamsi is very tasty. When customers come to the market, they are looking for hamsi. They ask for hamsi. Prices are very reasonable. The price of hamsi is 100 lira per kilogram, and it’s filling. The cold weather has increased the abundance of fish. Istavrit has come to shore, so to speak. Palamut has ended, but the ‘gypsy palamut’ has started. At this time of year, all types of fish are available.”
