Blow to freedom of expression before elections: “the disinformation law”

A new draft law submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey with the signature of AK Party and MHP deputies defines “publicly disseminating information misleading the public”, also known as disinformation, as a crime, while new restrictions are imposed on news published online, social media and communication applications such as WhatsApp, Signal.

The “Law Proposal on Amendments to the Press Code and Some Laws”, which has been discussed as a “disinformation law” for some time, was submitted to the Parliament on May 26. The proposal introduces far-reaching changes to the press code, the Internet law and the electronic communications laws, while “publicly disseminating information that misleads the public” is considered a crime.

PREPARATION TO CONTAIN INTERNET MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS BEFORE ELECTIONS?

Yaman Akdeniz, an IT law expert and one of the founders of the Freedom of Expression Association, describes the bill as a “preparation to contain the internet media and social media platforms before the elections”. According to Akdeniz, if this proposal becomes law, the scope of Internet access bans will expand, additional obligations will be imposed on social media platforms, applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram October will be subject to audit.
