China’s Retaliation Against the US: Raising Tariffs to 84%

China has announced that it would increase the additional tariffs on US goods to 84%, effective from April 10. This move comes in response to the US’s decision to impose a 104% tariff rate on Chinese imports.

In the ongoing trade war between the world’s two largest economies, China revealed it would raise its retaliatory tariffs on US products from 34% to 84%. The Chinese government’s statement indicated that these countermeasures would take effect on April 10.

Trump’s 104% Tariff Decision

On April 2, US President Donald Trump had announced reciprocal tariff rates for other countries, calling it a “liberation day.” He stated that the base tariff would be 10%, but adjusted it based on the tariffs and non-tariff barriers imposed by other countries. As part of this decision, the US would impose a 34% tariff on imports from China.

China was the first country to respond to the US’s tariff hike, announcing a corresponding 34% tariff increase. In retaliation, President Trump warned that if China did not retract its tariffs, the US would impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods.

Previously, Trump had signed an executive order on February 1, imposing a 10% tariff on imports from China, which was later raised to 20% on March 4. As a result, the total tariff rate on imports from China by the US could reach 104%.

China’s Stance

In response to these developments, China has made it clear that it will not back down. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, stated, “The US is trying to exert pressure on China using tariffs. China will never bow to this bullying behavior.” Jian emphasized that China would take firm countermeasures to protect its rights and interests, asserting that no one would be allowed to deprive the Chinese people of their legitimate right to development.
