CANCER VACCINE

The news that the world has been waiting for with hope, after it has gradually left the pandemic behind, has come from the United States. The company that produces vaccines against coronavirus (Covid-19) has signed a flash announcement about the cancer vaccine.

The coronavirus that emerged in Wuhan, China in the last days of 2019 had turned into a global pandemic in a short time and cost more than 6.5 million lives.

While the world is preparing to leave the pandemic behind with the help of corona vaccines, a very important news has come from the USA. Moderna, which also produces the corona vaccine, has published its highly anticipated results for the cancer vaccine.

The statement made by the US-based company soon became the number one agenda item of the scientific world. According to a report in the New York Post, the company announced that the vaccine had shown effective results against melanoma, which causes skin cancer.

It was announced that if the vaccine was used together with a drug called Keytruda, developed by Merck, there was a decrease in the risk of death from fatal skin cancer or the re-emergence of the disease.

In the same statement, it was informed that the risk was reduced by 44 percent compared to the case of using only Keytruda.

The company that produces personalized vaccines takes tumor and healthy tissue samples from the patient in the first place. Then, the team creates a patient-specific cancer vaccine by studying gene sequencing, mutated proteins and other data.

THE RISK OF SIDE EFFECTS WAS ALSO EXPLAINED

Scientists who examined 157 skin cancer patients at the third and fourth stages determined the risk of side effects to be 14.4 percent.

‘The research results will provide a new perspective on the treatment of cancer,’ said Paul Burton, the company’s executive vice president of medical developments, who made a statement on behalf of Moderna.

FOUNDERS OF BIONTECH GAVE A DATE

Moderna is not the only company working in this field. Dr. Uğur Şahin and Prof. Dr. Özlem Türeci who saved millions of lives with the coronavirus vaccine they produced are also working hard for the cancer vaccine. Turkish-born scientists had said that mRNA-based cancer vaccines could be ready before 2030.
