Council of Europe calls on Turkey regarding detainment of Demirtas and Kavala

In addition to Kavala, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe also assessed the situation of former HDP Co-Chairman Demirtas, who is under arrest. The Council of Europe has appealed to Turkey regarding Osman Kavala and Demirtas, who are kept detained despite the ECHR’s decision.

“We strongly demand the release of Demirtas” the statement said. The Council requested that the AYM decide on the Demirtas application as soon as possible in accordance with the decisions of the ECHR.

VIOLATION PROCEDURE INITIATED

The Committee initiated a violation procedure against Turkey on the grounds that it did not implement the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Osman Kavala.

As European Council having informed Turkey that it had initiated a violation procedure, prepares to bring the issue to the ECHR meeting to be held on 2 February 2022, it has requested Turkey to submit its opinion on the issue by 19 January 2022

It was noted that 35 of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe supported the initiation of a violation process.
