Experts: Omicron increases the risk of re-contracting Covid-19 three times
South African experts have announced that Omicron causes re-contracting Covid-19 at three times the rate of previous variants.
The World Health Organization had named the B.1.1.529 variant which was first detected in South Africa, Omicron. Because the new variant has a large number of mutations, it has raised concerns that it may reduce the effect of the vaccine and be more contagious. Experts are continuing their research to better understand the difference of the Omicron variant from previous variants.
According to data collected by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of South Africa (NICD), epidemiological evidence shows that Omicron can escape the immunity acquired as a result of contracting the disease with earlier variants and cause re-illness at a three-fold rate.
The latest findings have been interpreted as ’epidemiological evidence of Omicron’s ability to evade immunity gained from previous infection’.
