A lifetime ban on the sale of cigarettes and nicotine products to those born after 2010 is on the agenda in Denmark to ensure that future generations have a smoke-free life.

Speaking to reporters, health minister of Denmark said “We hope that people born in 2010 and beyond will never start smoking or use nicotine products. If necessary, we are ready to gradually raise the age limit for this generation and ban the sale of these products.”

According to current laws, to buy cigarettes and electronic cigarettes in Denmark, it is necessary to be over the age of 18. According to the data of the ministry of health, 31 percent of people aged 15-29 smoke.

In the country of 5.8 million people, smoking is the main cause of cancer and is responsible for 13,600 deaths per year. According to a survey by the Danish Cancer Society, 64 percent of the community supports the government’s plan and 67 percent of those who support it are between 18-34 years of age.

A law also scheduled to come out this year in New Zealand will ban anyone born after 2008 from buying cigarettes for life.
