EKREM IMAMOGLU MAYOR OF ISTANBUL

According to an article by Altan SANCAR, a prominent journalist, the goal of Turkey’s government is not only to neutralize Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) President Ekrem Imamoğlu and ‘capture Istanbul’ before the elections. The journalist thinks the ultimate goal is to push Imamoğlu out of politics in a way that he will never return.

The removal of Imamoğlu from office and the appointment of a trustee in his place due to judicial decisions remains current from the point of view of the government. However, according to what Diken newspaper learned, at a meeting of the ruling wing, the option that could end Imamoğlu’s political life was also focused on.

Imamoğlu was given a prison sentence and banned from politics on December 14, 2022 on the grounds of ‘insult’ to Supreme Election Committee. The case is under appeal. On the other hand, preparations are being made for Imamoğlu’s dismissal from office on grounds of issue related to ‘terror’. Finally, a ‘corruption to tender’ investigation was also initiated against Imamoğlu.

To recap, based on above steps taken by the ruling power some opinion leaders (as well as many millions) do think the government does target to abolish political future of Imamoglu. As often expressed by many experts President Erdogan sees IMAMOGLU as a serious threat that could cost the ruling bloc 2023 elections. Many polls (and reliable / reputable ones) have clearly shown IMAMOGLU would/could easily beat the current president in 2023 presidential election in case he had the opportunity to run for president.
