Dried Figs .. A Most Popular Turkish Export Item

Holding a 40 percent share in production and 60 percent in export, Turkey is the unrivalled leader og world’s dried fig market.

The word “dried fig”  has almost became a brand associated with the country. The fig, indigenous to the Anatloian region has the most suitable growing conditions in the area where it originated in the Mediterranean basin.

There were about 5 million fig trees in the 1950s; the number increased to 6 million in the 1980s, 9 million in the 1990s and finally to 10 million in 2000s.

EXPORTS

Turkey has a 250 year old history of fig export . Until the 1950s, the export market was limited within a few western countries ; the global demand increased dramatically in the last 50 years and the export market expanded accordingly throughout the world.

In the last two decades the dried fig exports increased from 50 million dollars to 150 million dollars.

With a production around 300,000 tons  Turkey is the world’s largest producer of raisins.

85 percent of the production is exported. Turkey is also the leading producer and exporter of dried figs. The country’s main target is to continue and even expand its production and export quantities.

Turkey has the most successful dried export companies to supply the world markets. Turkis companies have also established some worldwide popular brands in this regard.
