Drivers Beware! “Record Traffic Fines Ahead in Turkey”

A new amendment to the Highway Traffic Law is on the way, and it could completely reshape how traffic violations are penalized in Turkey. The government has prepared a proposal that will bring record fines for dangerous driving behaviors, with some penalties reaching hundreds of thousands of lira.

Heavy Penalties for Risky Driving

According to the draft law, drivers who endanger traffic safety by weaving dangerously, known as “makas atma,” may face a fine of 180,000 TL. Using fake license plates could result in a shocking 280,000 TL fine, while reckless acts like drifting are expected to cost 140,000 TL. Driving without a license will carry a fine of 40,000 TL, and those caught driving with a canceled license may face a 200,000 TL penalty.

Strict Measures to Protect Public Safety

The proposal also targets violations that put lives at immediate risk. Failing to give way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances or fire trucks could bring a fine of 46,000 TL. Drivers who ignore police stop warnings may face fines up to 200,000 TL. More seriously, those who flee from the scene of an accident with injuries or fatalities will face both a fine of 46,000 TL and up to three years in prison.

Everyday Infractions Will Also Cost More

It is not only extreme violations that are being addressed. Common infractions will also see steep increases. Talking on a phone while driving and running a red light could each result in a fine of 5,000 TL. Not wearing a seatbelt will carry a penalty of 2,500 TL, while driving under the influence (DUI) will cost 25,000 TL. Aggressive driving and tailgating will be met with fines of 180,000 TL and a 60-day suspension of the driver’s license.

Government’s Message: Safety First

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya emphasized that these fines were not designed as a source of income. Instead, the government’s stated goal is to reduce fatalities by half, as directed by President Erdoğan. The stricter penalties aim to encourage responsible driving and make roads safer for everyone.
