Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, geologist and member of the Academy of Science Geologist said, “There are two active fault branches in Marmara that will produce earthquakes. One of them is the Islands (Princess) arm, about 45 kilometers long. When this is completely broken, it will produce an earthquake of the order of 6. Another one is the Kumburgaz fault arm. It extends from the coast of Yeşilköy to the coast of Silivri. This is also 65 kilometers long. When broken, it will produce a minimum of 7.2. If they both break, it can go up to 7.5, 7.6.

He went on to say, “Since the Tekirdağ fault to the west of Marmara probably broke in the 1912 Şarköy earthquake, we do not think that a big earthquake will be produced there. Therefore, we think that the earthquake in Marmara will range between 7.2 and 7.6.”

For the consecutive earthquakes in Kayseri and Sivas, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür said “it would not be surprising for us if there are earthquakes in Kayseri, Sivas. There may be a movement in the faults in those regions due to two earthquakes.”
