Economy in Turkey: As price of meat keeps rising, warning of 40 TL for a single lahmacun comes

Vice President of the Association of Food Laboratories and Food Inspectors (GLADER), stated that the if lahmacun is sold for less than 40 liras, it could be counterfeit food.
Meat prices have increased by 50 percent in the last two months. The chamber of butchers had informed that the increase, which should have been experienced in a year, had occurred in two months and urged the authorities to take precautions.
This increase was also reflected in restaurants. According to data obtained in the market, lahmacun was the most ordered product in Turkey last year. Lahmacun prices have increased, but experts have warnings for cheap places.
For example, according to the recipes in a classic lahmacun, there should be 50 grams of meat. When the profit margin is added along with other expenses, a lahmacun should not fall below 40 TL.
Despite this situation, it is possible to eat lahmacun for 20 liras in some districts of Istanbul such as Esenyurt.
Supervisory authorities state that lahmacun is open to all kinds of tricks and this could also apply to different products. According to Haberturk, a professional in the market said ”If lahmacun is sold for less than 40 liras, it is impossible to have a lahmacun with proper meat in it.”
