ELEVATOR ACCIDENT IN AYDIN

A student lost her life as a result of an elevator malfunction at the KYK Dormitory. It has been alleged that the elevator was faulty, and complaints were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. What students have recounted, inspection reports, and revelations suggest that the disaster occurred as a result of negligence. The students stated, “We came here to study, not to die.”

In the KYK Güzelhisar Girls’ Student Dormitory in the Efeler district of Aydın, a student lost her life while trying to exit a malfunctioning elevator, which had gotten stuck. After the devastating incident, many students protested the management, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced the suspension of the dormitory director.

On the night before, at 00:05, the elevator, which had 16 students inside, malfunctioned. As the elevator, reportedly designed for a maximum of 15 people, began to slide due to “excess weight,” panic ensued, and 22-year-old Zeren Ertaş, while attempting to exit the elevator, got stuck between the cabin and the wall and lost her life.

Governor shares excuses

The governor of the province shifted the responsibility to the students. He claimed that 16 people had boarded the 15-person capacity elevator, and the elevator started to slide before the door closed on the first floor. He asserted that the tragedy was caused by “exceeding the elevator’s weight capacity.”
