Cavusoglu: Erdogan and Putin to meet on Monday to discuss Syria and Idlib

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Cavusoglu has told journalists that Russian President Putin and President Erdogan will meet in Sochi on Monday 17th September. Details of the visit will be discussed with Putin’s representative at the Idlib meeting to be hosted by Ibrahim KALIN, in Istanbul.

Cavusoglu, who is in Pakistan for an official visit, held a joint press conference after seeing Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmud Kureyasi. He expressed his happiness for being in Pakistan, a second home for Turks and emphasized it was also meaningful that this visit took place immediately after the elections in the two countries.

Regarding the issue of Idlib, Minister Cavusoglu emphasized that Turkey followed the most predictable and clear policy for Syria and Idlib and his country wanted peace and a political solution in Syria.

The Minister expressed that Turkey made great efforts for a solution in Astana and Geneva and they wanted a political solution in Syria.  He stated that Turkey was determined to fight terror which is a threat for the future of his country.

The Minister reminded that Turkey had made efforts in bilateral and trilateral levels to stop attacks in Idlib, adding they had taken up the matter with other different actors as well. He said, “We are prepared to work together with everyone in the fight against terrorist organizations. However it is not right or human that all to include civilians, women and children are killed this way without any distinction under cover of fight against the terrorist organization. We cannot bring peace this way.”

Cavusoglu said that Turkey would continue its contacts on this issue adding “On Monday, our president, Erdogan will hold another meeting with Putin. We will continue our efforts at UN. Already Turkey has been receiving serious support for its efforts from the whole world and institutions in”.
